Hong Kong.

Staying in the Mirador mansions or Chungking Mansions of Tsimshumsui, Kowloon, is the best way to get the full effects of Hong Kong. What you’ve got to realise is that the Hong Kong Chinese have a totally different understanding of the meaning of the word "mansion" than you probably do. To them a "mansion" is a crumbling tower block with elevators that never work, stairwells that double as a garbage chute and as many people as is inhumanely possible crammed inside. Oh, I almost forgot -- the mansions regularly catch on fire, causing a panic unknown in the Western world.

During one visit, I stayed in a room that was so crowded I had to take a number to breathe out. The cramped conditions proved an effective crowd control measure, however, when the police raided the joint at 4 AM looking for illegal immigrants. The policeman’s command of "Don’t move!" seemed a little superfluous.
